Tips for Ensuring Pet Safety During Swimming

As the summer temperatures rise, both you and your furry companion may seek relief by taking a swim. However, not all pets are natural swimmers, so it’s crucial to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Here are five tips to help keep your pet safe while swimming:

1. Keep fresh water available: When your pet is thirsty and enters a pool or any body of water, they may end up drinking chemical-laden or contaminated water. Make sure to provide plenty of fresh water for your pet to drink before and after swimming.

2. Use a life vest: If your pet will be in deep water, it’s a good idea to have them wear a life vest in addition to relying on their swimming skills. Allow your pet to try on the life vest beforehand, giving them time to become comfortable and accustomed to wearing it.

3. Never leave your pet unattended: Pets can panic when left alone in water, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your furry friend while they are swimming. Never leave them unattended in the water.

4. Teach your pet how to exit the pool: In case your pet accidentally falls into the pool when you’re not around, it’s crucial that they know how to get out without assistance. Ensure there are stable stairs or an exit ramp that your pet can use to climb out of the pool, and make sure they are familiar with how to use them.

5. Rinse off your pet after swimming: After a swim, chemicals, pathogens, and debris can accumulate in your pet’s fur. To prevent them from grooming these contaminants off their body, thoroughly rinse your pet’s fur after they swim.

Accidents can occur around water, especially if your pet is unfamiliar with swimming or leans in for a drink without knowing how to swim. If your pet experiences a water-related emergency this summer, don’t hesitate to contact our team for assistance.
